Q: Why would I have a root canal?
A: If you are in pain and need to be treated but don’t want to have your tooth extracted, a root canal might be best for you.
Q: Why does nerve tissue or pulp have to be removed?
A: The nerve of a normal tooth is sterile and stable, and when a tooth has a cavity or gets cracked, this stability gets disrupted. Antibiotics or our inflammatory response won’t cure it because the orifice of the tooth can’t expand to allow sufficient blood supply for a cure to be possible. Although there are other reasons why nerve tissue would have to be removed, this is the classic example.
Q: Is it painful to have a root canal?
A: Root canals have an unfair reputation for being painful. Luckily they’re usually painless.
