FAQ

Q: How do I know it’s time to have my wisdom teeth removed?

A: First, if you’re in pain, sensitive to hot or cold temperatures on your wisdom teeth, have a problematic cavity, or inflamed gums, then it’s probably best to get them removed. Second, if you’re looking to do it as a preventative measure, you should be older than 16 and younger than 40. Otherwise, you are probably fine to leave them in. If you aren’t sure if it’s time to get your wisdom teeth removed, come in for a consultation, and we can help you choose the path that is best for you.

Q: How long will I be in pain after wisdom tooth removal?

A: After extraction, the body has an inflammation response to the surgery that causes pain for 2 to 5 days, with the pain usually being worst on day 2 or 3. Once you get past that, the pain should almost entirely drop off. You may have mild discomfort for a few weeks afterward, but it should be easily manageable.

Q: How many wisdom teeth do you remove at once?

A: Most often, we remove all four teeth at once. For special cases, we’ll remove only two teeth on one side if that’s best for the patient.

Q: How long does it take to remove wisdom teeth?

A: On average, we take roughly 30 minutes from start to finish, but every case is a little different. We’ve had extractions as short as 10 minutes, and others last closer to an hour. The time it takes depends on the case and what is best for that specific patient.

Q: What sedation options do you have for wisdom tooth removal?

A: We offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral medications, and IV sedation.

Q: Do all wisdom teeth eventually cause problems and require removal?

A: No. Some wisdom teeth come into the mouth like normal teeth. Most of the time, removal is needed but not always.

Q: How long should I take off work after the removal of all four wisdom teeth?

A: Every case is different, but patients usually find that 3 to 4 days is plenty of time to heal and go back to work.
